Network Convergence
The network infrastructure is the communications foundation
on which IT business initiatives depend for success. The need
to deliver new enterprise services within shrinking delivery
schedules; the high cost, exposure, and lack of cohesiveness
associated with disjoint networks require organizations to create
a flexible, agile, yet cost effective network infrastructure.
The disjointedness of the many isolated specialized networks
that exist in organizations today make it impossible to
achieve optimal cost structures and make it difficult for users
to move seamlessly between them as they do their jobs. Emerging
technology like IP telephony; Multimodal and multi-network devices
that effectively converge the wired and wireless worlds; services
such as MPLS and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) are all targeted
at converging the separate and multiple data, voice, imaging
and video networks into one seamless network infrastructure.
This gives organizations and individuals the connectivity capability
to do business wherever and whenever.
Security, always a concern, is addressed with next-generation
devices that converge LAN switching, WAN switching, firewalls,
intrusion prevention, roaming, authentication, encryption and
other functionalities. The ubiquity of the network and technologies
like grid computing that removes location from computing will
cause computing and communications to converge.
DCi views converged network services as the key to unlocking
the flexibility, agility and scalability capabilities necessary
to address the dynamic and demanding business needs required
of an enterprise network. Converged network services
are an integral component of the IT infrastructure that delivers
a cost effective, agile, secure and flexible e-business foundation
for an enterprise.
